Filecoin restated its push for paid storage deals on Oct. 20 ET (Oct. 21 UTC), after a network upgrade changed how services that bring in customers earn rewards.

The decentralized storage network first laid out that direction in its February 2026 strategy. It aims to move beyond expanding available capacity by increasing paid onchain deals and attracting customers with substantial data needs, including AI workloads.

The Solstice upgrade, completed Oct. 19, gives services that attract paying customers a growing share of block rewards as payment volume rises. The change ties that share to customer payments rather than allocating it unconditionally.

Filecoin has also outlined tools that let AI agents store files, obtain public links and pay onchain. Its broader plan calls for easier connections between enterprise storage workloads and the network, along with a proposed onchain payment layer for storage, retrieval and computing.
