BitGo opened a lab focused on artificial intelligence and crypto Oct. 21, extending its earlier developer and internal AI work toward applications including Gokubu, a consumer app.

BitGo Labs will develop applications using the company’s financial technology. Its initial focus is on combining AI and crypto. Gokubu is among the lab’s first projects, and sign-ups are open.

The app features an AI-powered payment card accepted wherever Visa is accepted, along with a personalized AI financial assistant. The assistant is designed to help users manage spending and find rewards.

BitGo’s thesis is that autonomous AI agents may need crypto infrastructure for small payments, fast settlement and asset custody. That is a potential use case for the lab; Gokubu is not described as a service for AI agents to make crypto transactions.

The lab plans to publish research, prototype protocols and develop reference implementations. Separately, it plans to work with developers, academics and institutions.

BitGo’s earlier AI work included a March tool that lets compatible AI tools access its developer documentation and product information through natural-language queries. In August, the company expanded AI use in engineering and operations.

BitGo Labs has a different focus from BitGo Research, the institutional market-analysis unit launched in September. That unit produces analysis of digital asset markets and broader economic trends.
