Coinbase’s AI Agent Derivatives Access Was Already Available
Coinbase listed crypto and derivatives as existing agent features on Sept. 22. Perpetual-contract trading by agents had been covered by Oct. 19.

Coinbase’s AI-agent access to crypto derivatives predates Oct. 21: the company described crypto and derivatives features as already available by Sept. 22, and agents’ perpetual-contract trading had been covered by Oct. 19.
Coinbase’s Sept. 22 announcement identified stock trading and micropayments as additions for agents. It placed them alongside crypto and derivatives functions that were already available, rather than presenting derivatives access as a new launch. The timing makes the distinction important: the announcement broadened agents’ uses but did not mark the start of derivatives access.
Coinbase for Agents launched June 11, allowing users to connect an AI agent to a Coinbase account for trading and other tasks within limits set by the user. Users could connect a language model and direct an agent to execute perpetual-contract trades, as covered earlier. The user-defined limits remain part of the product’s stated design, including when an agent carries out trading tasks.
The confirmed sequence is a June launch, crypto and derivatives features already available by September, and added stock trading and micropayments announced Sept. 22.
