Newton Foundation Says Binance Incident Attacker Sent Tokens Worth About $3.5M
About 8 million NEWT and 17 other token types are trapped in a contract with no administrator permissions or upgrade path.

Newton Foundation said an attacker in the Binance hacking incident sent about 8 million NEWT tokens and 17 other token types to a contract that cannot return them.
The Foundation described the transfer as an apparent mistake and said it happened Friday, Oct. 30. It valued the assets at about $3.5 million at prevailing prices.
The Foundation said the contract itself was not compromised. It described the contract as immutable, saying it gave up all administrator permissions in 2025 and permanently disabled upgrades. With no administrator access or upgrade path, neither the Foundation nor anyone else can retrieve or move tokens sent there.
The Foundation said the attacker can no longer control or sell the tokens. It shared its findings with Binance and said it will continue assisting the exchange. The Binance security incident has also led to asset freezes by Ripple and World Liberty Financial.
