A separate Polymarket incident led to at least $2.7 million being stolen from users’ wallets. Experts disagree on whether exchange accounts or self-custody wallets offer greater protection.

An incident affecting about $6.3 billion in Binance assets has renewed concerns about exchange wallet security, while a separate breach at Polymarket led to at least $2.7 million being stolen from users’ wallets.

Polymarket’s international platform temporarily halted trading after a third-party data provider was hacked. The incident has sharpened debate over whether users face greater risk on exchanges or in self-custody wallets.

Tyler Moore, a cybersecurity professor at the University of Tulsa, said holding large balances on exchanges carries risk because crypto platforms lack protections comparable to insured bank deposits. Ido Ben-Natan, CEO of Blockaid, said Binance’s and Polymarket’s commitments to reimburse affected users support confidence in the platforms and predicted users would not lose funds. University of Pennsylvania professor Brett Falk favored platforms backed by companies with resources to compensate customers over self-custody wallets that may offer no such backstop.

Experts expect more security incidents in the near term as AI changes cyberattack methods. CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said offshore platforms involved in the episode lack safeguards comparable to those in U.S. financial markets. He wants a federal option for trading platforms to register with the CFTC and meet cybersecurity requirements. Falk questioned whether U.S. regulation could prevent similar attacks, while Global Settlement Network CEO Ryan Kirkley said there is no broadly available way to guarantee wallet assets are safe.
