The U.S. Secret Service said it helped freeze a substantial share of stolen assets within minutes of a Thursday attack on Binance, while about $3 billion in assets tied to the case have been frozen overall.
Investigators began working with crypto industry partners immediately after the attack to identify and freeze stolen assets. The Secret Service did not state how much its work secured, leaving its contribution to the roughly $3 billion total unspecified.
Binance put its losses from the compromised hot wallets at $6.3 billion. The Secret Service’s investigation into the Binance theft has included a rapid effort to freeze funds.
The FBI has attributed the theft to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group and made public hundreds of wallet addresses linked to the case. Federal agencies are tracking the remaining funds and working to recover them.
