The products would use a benchmark that weights token prices by model usage and would require regulatory approval before launch.

CME Group and Silicon Data plan to introduce tradable products tied to AI model token prices, adding a consumer-side measure alongside their proposed GPU rental futures.

The products would use Silicon Data’s LLM Token Expenditure Index. It weights token prices across AI models by usage to estimate an effective price per million tokens; it does not record each customer’s bill. The index adds a usage-weighted view of the consumer side of AI economics alongside GPU computing cost measures.

The index has remained near its lowest level since publication began in December 2025, after falling over the summer. The decline may reflect users shifting from higher-priced models to cheaper alternatives.

The token products are planned for the coming months, pending regulatory approval. The separate GPU rental futures had an initial Oct. 5 launch target that was postponed while regulatory review proceeds.
