New applications for U.S. unemployment benefits rose by 1,000 to 199,000 in the week ended Oct. 10, coming in 1,000 below the 200,000 estimate in TokenPost’s pre-release calendar.

The prior week’s total was revised up to 198,000 from 197,000. Initial claims count people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time.

The weekly labor-market figure covers a different period from September’s Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures prices received by domestic producers. TokenPost’s September producer inflation report included the 199,000 claims reading alongside the monthly inflation data.
