Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, bringing significantly stronger reasoning and coding capabilities. While the new AI model promises major benefits for software development and cybersecurity, experts warn it could also increase risks for the cryptocurrency industry, which continues to struggle with hacks, phishing attacks, and operational security failures.

The public version of Claude Fable 5 includes enhanced coding and analytical abilities while incorporating safeguards designed to block dangerous misuse. Anthropic has also released a more powerful version, Claude Mythos 5, which is available only to approved organizations in cybersecurity and critical infrastructure sectors.

Security researchers believe Mythos-level AI can identify and connect previously unknown software vulnerabilities, commonly known as zero-day flaws, and potentially assist in developing sophisticated cyberattacks. Anthropic says high-risk requests are automatically detected and redirected to a less capable model, reducing the likelihood of abuse. According to the company, this safety mechanism activates in fewer than 5% of user sessions.

Despite these protections, experts argue that AI guardrails alone are unlikely to stop determined attackers. Charles Guillemet, Chief Technology Officer at Ledger, noted that the greatest advantage AI offers cybercriminals is speed rather than innovation. Advanced AI systems can rapidly analyze code repositories, compare software updates, identify configuration mistakes, and uncover weaknesses far faster than humans.

The crypto sector remains particularly vulnerable because software failures often translate directly into financial losses. DeFi protocols have already lost more than $840 million to hacks during the first five months of the year. Many of the largest incidents were not caused by smart contract vulnerabilities but by social engineering attacks, compromised private keys, and human mistakes.

Recent attacks on projects such as Drift Protocol, Kelp DAO, and Humanity Protocol highlight how operational security failures continue to be a primary threat. AI can accelerate reconnaissance efforts by analyzing public data, reviewing audit reports, and creating convincing phishing messages, making these attacks more efficient.

However, the same AI technology can also strengthen defenses. DeFi protocol Pendle reports using Anthropic’s models to review code, stress-test smart contracts, and identify bugs before deployment. Developers argue that smart contracts are relatively compact and easier to audit than the broader operational systems surrounding them.

As AI continues to evolve, the biggest challenge for crypto security may not be new attack methods but the speed at which existing threats can be executed. Strong key management, secure hardware wallets, trusted signing processes, and robust cybersecurity practices will remain essential defenses in an increasingly AI-driven threat landscape.
