The Ethereum community is once again debating the future of the Ethereum Foundation (EF) following the announcement that co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang will step down from her leadership position and return to a research-focused role. Her departure adds to a growing list of senior exits that have intensified concerns about the Foundation’s management, governance structure, and long-term direction.

Wang was one of two co-executive directors appointed during a leadership restructuring aimed at strengthening the organization. However, her decision to leave the role comes amid a period of significant transition for the Switzerland-based nonprofit, which plays a key role in coordinating Ethereum research, development, and ecosystem initiatives.

Over the past five months, at least eight other senior figures have also exited the Foundation, fueling discussions about organizational effectiveness and Ethereum’s ability to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving blockchain industry.

The departures coincide with the introduction of the Foundation’s new strategic framework, known as CROPS, which stands for cypherpunk values, resilience, open-source development, permissionlessness, and security. EF leaders describe the framework as a reaffirmation of Ethereum’s core principles and mission as the network continues to decentralize. While supporters see CROPS as a positive step toward preserving Ethereum’s identity, critics argue that it fails to address operational and execution-related concerns.

Former Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist emerged as one of the most outspoken critics, arguing that recent departures point to management challenges rather than disagreements with the Foundation’s strategic vision. According to Feist, many of those leaving strongly support the CROPS framework, making the talent loss more concerning for Ethereum’s future.

Similar concerns have been voiced by other industry figures, including Coinbase Head of Engineering Yuga Cohler, who publicly expressed disappointment over what he described as dysfunction within the Ethereum Foundation.

The debate comes as Ethereum faces increasing competition from rival blockchain networks and ongoing criticism regarding its market performance despite maintaining its position as the leading smart-contract platform. Questions surrounding the Foundation’s role and effectiveness have become more prominent during periods of market uncertainty.

Prominent community member DCinvestor suggested that Ethereum’s research and development efforts should eventually operate independently from ecosystem development through a structure resembling an industry consortium. He argued that combining these functions has occasionally created conflicts of interest and slowed protocol progress relative to market demands.

Despite acknowledging concerns surrounding the recent leadership changes, DCinvestor emphasized that Ethereum’s decentralized nature remains its greatest strength. He maintained that while governance issues require long-term solutions, the underlying protocol continues to remain resilient.

Not all observers view Wang’s departure negatively. Some community members believe the changes reflect Ethereum’s broader push toward decentralization, with responsibility increasingly distributed across developers, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), and independent institutions rather than concentrated within the Ethereum Foundation.

Supporters of this perspective argue that a smaller and more focused Foundation could strengthen Ethereum’s ecosystem by encouraging broader stewardship and community-led innovation.

As discussions continue, Wang’s exit has become the latest focal point in an ongoing debate about Ethereum governance. Whether these departures signal deeper leadership challenges or represent a natural step toward greater decentralization remains a key question for the Ethereum community and the broader blockchain industry.
