Polymarket Market Did Not List 2026 Nobel Winner as Candidate
South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay won the prize after her outcome appeared only under an “other person or organization” contract.

Polymarket’s 2026 Nobel Peace Prize market did not list eventual winner South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay as a named candidate, underscoring how prediction markets depend on their defined outcomes.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Pillay the prize at 5 a.m. ET (09:00 UTC) on Oct. 9 for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Her outcome was covered by a catch-all contract for “other person or organization” rather than a contract naming her directly.
Polymarket’s market page later displayed Yulia Navalnaya at 19.6%, Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms at 14.2% and Mykola Kuleba at 12.6%. Kalshi’s separate Nobel market also did not list Pillay before the announcement.
The market had recorded $32.3 million in trading volume since opening in October 2025. That followed earlier growth in Polymarket’s Nobel market, which reached $27.36 million in trading volume before the winner was announced.
Prediction-market probabilities reflect the candidates listed in a market, its contract rules, available liquidity and trading activity. They do not automatically represent every possible real-world outcome.
Pillay served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also served as United Nations high commissioner for human rights from 2008 to 2014 and as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice.
The award recognized her work supporting the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Nominee names remain confidential for 50 years, limiting the information available to traders before the announcement.
Polymarket’s contracts are settled based on the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s official announcement. The committee’s decision on Oct. 9 determined the winning outcome for the market.
